There may be harmful habits you do on a daily basis that may be damaging your plumbing. Take note of these five things your plumber wishes you didn’t do.

Flush Things Down the Toilet That You Shouldn’t

You may be guilty of this, but it is a common mistake to flush things down the toilet that aren’t meant to be flushed. Don’t be mistaken; your toilet is not at your dispense like a garbage can. Flushing anything other than toilet paper down your toilet can cause it to back up and become clogged.

For example:

  • Feminine products
  • Paper towels
  • Garbage

Using Chemical Cleaners

Stores pack the shelves with chemical drain cleaners, supposedly guaranteed to unclog a stopped-up drain. However, plumbers would have to argue otherwise about the performance of these products. The chemicals can cause erosion and decay in your pipes, a much larger problem than the temporary problem of a clog. Set aside the chemicals, and call a plumber instead.

Overloading the Garbage Disposal

Similar to the toilet, it’s easy to think your garbage disposal can handle whatever is thrown its way. However, even garbage disposals have their limits. Keep this in mind next time you have things to throw down the drain.

Using Drop-in Tablet Toilet Cleaners

While this may sound fast, appealing, and convenient, the use of small toilet cleaners has a negative impact on your pipes. It is best to avoid these tablets altogether to avoid any potential, chemical-induced risks of these cleaners.

Trying to Fix Plumbing Problems Yourself

As tempting as it may be, don’t attempt to fix your plumbing problems by yourself. Hire a plumber to do the handiwork; this will save you money in the long run. Call A&R at (806)372-1572 if you need assistance on any of your plumbing, heating, and air conditioning needs.
