How to Combat Bathroom Mold

Fall is officially here, which means more guests are visiting your home. Don’t let mold and a dirty bathroom keep you from having fun. Use any of these five remedies to remove bathroom mold and scum!

1. Baking Soda

Combine one cup of baking soda and one teaspoon of liquid soap into a bowl. Add water to form a paste consistency and then it’s ready.Just scrub and rinse with hot water. For nice aroma, try adding several drops of essential oil such as lavender, lemon, or peppermint.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide

Transfer 3% hydrogen peroxide in a dark spray bottle–the effectiveness in the peroxide will decrease when exposed to light. Spray moldy surface and wait 20-25 minutes to allow the peroxide to attack and kill the mold. Check to make sure the surface fades during this period and then wait an additional hour. Next, wipe the surface clean, rinse, and wipe again.

3. Bleach

Mix two parts water with one part bleach and pour into a spray bottle. Spray the moldy area with the solution and allow it to completely dry. Then respray the area and scrub. Rinse and repeat until all of the molds is rinsed off. Remember to wear gloves while cleaning, as bleach can be harmful to your skin.

4. Borax

This is all natural and works as a safe insecticide. Mix one gallon of water with one cup of borax in a bucket. Then scrub the desired area with a brush and the borax solution. Scrub surrounding areas as well to keep the mold from spreading to a new place.

5. Vinegar

Using a funnel, transfer mild white vinegar into a spray bottle. DO NOT dilute with water; you’ll need the vinegar in its most potent form. Spray the vinegar onto moldy areas and leave on for an hour to an hour and a half with the bathroom door open. After the waiting time, wipe the area with hot water and a towel until clean.
