What Should You Know?

In most households, there are a variety of different products readily available. Such as vinegar and salt, we all know their intended use, but there are other ways the materials can be utilized to clean your bathroom. It’s never too late to learn about how to use common household products in a new and practical way.

Vinegar

Besides cooking, vinegar has many uses to help you around the house. Typically, it’s best to use distilled white vinegar when cleaning.

Vinegar can be used to:

  • Kill bathroom germs:
    Spraying vinegar around a sink or tub can help remove bacteria. Let sit for a few seconds, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  • Clean dirty faucets:
    Vinegar is perfect for removing lime buildup. If you mix a teaspoon of vinegar with two tablespoons of salt, you can make a paste that will help rid your faucet of unwanted lime buildup. Put the mixture on the faucet and rub with a cloth.
  • Renew a loofah:
    Soak for 24 hours in a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar to remove soap residue. Make sure to rinse the loofah with cold water before using.
  • Destroy shower head grime: Sometimes, your shower head becomes clogged with mineral deposits, decreasing the water pressure significantly. If you soak your shower head in a mixture of vinegar and water for 15 minutes, the shower should be working like brand new.
  • Unclog drains: Pour one cup of baking soda into your drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar, and let the product sit and bubble. After this, pour boiling water down the drain. This process should eliminate the clog.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a good disinfectant but has many practical uses in the bathroom. Most of the time, you need to dilute hydrogen peroxide before using it to clean.
Hydrogen peroxide acts as a:

  • Toothbrush sanitizer: Soaking toothbrushes in hydrogen peroxide can prevent the transfer of germs. Doing this is especially useful to stop yourself from recontamination after you’ve had a cold or flu.
  • Grout Whitener: To whiten your grout, you must ensure the bathtub is dry before spraying liberally with hydrogen peroxide. After letting it sit and bubble, you can scrub the grout with an old toothbrush or rag. You may need to repeat the process multiple times.
  • Toilet cleaner: Pour half a cup of hydrogen peroxide into a toilet bowl, let sit for 20 minutes, then scrub with a brush.
    Shower curtain cleaner: If you wash a shower curtain with hydrogen peroxide, it will remove soap scum and mildew. To get the most out of your wash, put it in the washer with one of your bath towels. Wash with your regular detergent, but add 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide to the rinse cycle.

Lemon Juice

Lemons may add a refreshing citrus flavor to a cup of water, but they can also help you clean your bathroom and make it shine.

You can use lemon juice to:

  • Remove soap scum: Rub the surface of tiles or the bathtub with a cut lemon. The acid from the lemon breaks down the bacteria found in soap scum.
  • Eliminate rust stains: After cutting a lemon in half, rub them directly onto the rust stains found on sinks and tubs. The stain should start to come off almost immediately.
  • Get rid of mildew and minerals: To remove mildew and minerals from a shower curtain, soak the curtain in salt water for 20 minutes. Then, hang to let the excess water drain. While the curtain is still damp, rub the stains with lemon juice.
  • Clean glass: To make glass cleaner, combine three tablespoons of lemon juice with ½ a cup of rubbing alcohol and ¼ teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. Mix in a spray bottle and fill the rest with water. Shake well before using.

Salt

Salt may be necessary while cooking, but it can also be highly beneficial when used as a cleaning agent.

Salt can:

  • Clean rust: Mixing salt with cream of tartar and water to create a paste can help remove rust. Rub the paste onto the rust, let dry, then clean it off with a dry cloth.
  • Extend toothbrush life: Before your first use, putting your toothbrush into a saltwater mixture can help the bristles last longer.
  • Clean sink drains: Mix salt dissolved in hot water down the drain to deodorize and clean a sink drain. Doing this can help keep scum from building up inside the pipes.

Baking Soda

Not only can baking soda be used in the kitchen, but it can aid during the cleaning process.

Use baking soda to:

  • Remove toilet rust rings: Sprinkle the inside of the toilet bowl with a cup of baking soda and moisten with vinegar. After letting it sit for 30 minutes, scrub the bowl thoroughly and flush the baking soda away.
  • Clean glass shower doors: When scrubbing the glass doors, all you need to do is sprinkle baking soda onto a damp sponge. After wiping down the glass, rinse the glass door and dry well.
  • Scrub stone tiles: Coat the stone tiles with a mixture of baking soda and water. After letting the paste sit for 24 to 48 hours, rinse and dry the surface thoroughly.
    Absorb odors: Baking soda is known to absorb odors, and it works well in the bathroom. If you want it to be more appealing, pour some into a pretty dish that can sit on your counter or the back of your toilet.
