It’s another summer day in West Texas, the kids are home, you’re feeling adventurous, but your A/C is broken…Why lounge around the house? We’ve compiled a list of activities to do in the Amarillo area to beat the heat while we fix your A/C.
Palo Duro Canyon
Palo Duro Canyon has over thirty miles of trails for hiking, biking, bird watching and even geocaching. The most popular trail is The Lighthouse, which takes hikers to the iconic lighthouse rock formation. If you want to make a weekend out of it, you can choose from cabins or campsites. Your campsite options include sites with water and electricity, primitive drive-up sites, equestrian sites, or backpack camping areas. In the summer, enjoy a live performance of the outdoor musical drama TEXAS, about the first settlers in the area.
Amarillo Zoo
The impressive Amarillo Zoo is a quick trip for a date or family getaway. Pique your kid’s curiosity by exploring the wildlife around you. Lions, tigers, and bears…oh my! The Zoo is the perfect destination for your next summer trip! If your kids are major nature lovers, sign them up for Safari Summer Camp where they can spend their week exploring wildlife with other campers.
Don Harrington Discovery Center
This one is for the kids! Stimulate your child’s mind by engaging in an interactive collection of scientific exhibits and programs. Whether it’s spending the day there as a family or signing the kids up for any of the 30 unique summer camps offered. Don’t miss the epic “Saturday “Science Live! every Saturday at noon and 3:30.
Wonderland Amusement Park
Rollercoasters and funnel cakes are sure to put a grin on your face. Rediscover your inner child by enjoying an adrenaline rush on one of the many coasters and thrill rides Wonderland Amusement Park has to offer. Nothing says summer more than a Ferris wheel and funnel cakes. Also, you don’t want to miss the summertime Food Truck Fridays!
Texas Air & Space Museum
Join Texas Air & Space Museum as they dive into the history of aviation in the Texas Panhandle. Home of aircraft legends, be inspired by the science and technology behind aviation. Walk through any or all five indoor exhibits and then make your way to the hanger to see twelve full-sized aircraft.
Amarillo Rock Climbing House
This one is for the thrill seekers out there. Enjoy a day of fitness and fun all in one at the Amarillo Rock Climbing House. In the summer, young adventurers can attend Summer Summit Climbing Camp. If you want to make climbing a regular thing, sign kids up for the climbing club, recreational youth team or competitive youth team.
Cadillac Ranch
This well-known Route 66 landmark provides the perfect Instagram opportunity on your way out of town or on the way to Palo Duro. The ten Cadillacs were buried between 1949 and 1964, with each being the newest tailfin model. Nowadays, you can bring a can of spray paint and make your mark on any of the Cadillacs.
