What You Should Know

Cleaning the house is a pretty normal occurrence for several households. The counters get a good cleaning, the floors get vacuumed, and the beds get made. What about your drains? Drains often get overlooked in the cleaning process. By the time we get around to cleaning them, we have already noticed a clog. These tips are quick fixes to prevent that shower from turning into a bath.

The classic solution to unclogging that pesky drain. Remove the tub stopper or sink pop-up and fill in enough water to cover the drain completely. Next, place the plunger directly over the drain and apply pressure to create suction.

This same process should be repeated until the water drains completely.

If you feel like taking matters into your own hands and avoiding harsh chemicals, try this home remedy to clear the clog.

1/2 cup table salt

1/2 cup baking soda

1/2 cup vinegar

Boiling water

Start by removing the sink pop-up or tub stopper. Combine the salt, and baking soda in a bowl then pour the mixture down the slow drain. Next, pour the vinegar in the drain covering the salt and baking soda (the mixture will fizz and bubble). Let the mixture sit in the drain for about 15-20 minutes. After you have let it sit, pour the boiling water down the drain. This should clean out the clog. If needed, repeat the process.

Drain Cleaners

If the home remedy option is not for you, it is always easy to just go to a store and pick up some drain cleaner. Drain cleaners range from about $7-$50, depending on the strength and quality of the product. You will pour the directed amount down your drain wait about 10-20 minutes, and then rinse with hot water.
