Are you having trouble with your heating and air conditioning systems or are looking for something new? There may be more available options than you realize. Heat pumps could be a great HVAC alternative to keep the temperature in your home just the way you like it. These incredible devices spell numerous advantages for homeowners including lower energy expenses and repair and maintenance costs.

What is a Heat Pump?

Most people who are familiar with traditional heating and cooling systems may not be familiar with heat pumps. Despite its name, a heat pump can be used for both cooling and heating by transferring heat from inside your home to outside your home and vice versa. While these devices used to be more uncommon due to their low performance in regions experiencing very cold temperatures, modern technology has made heat pumps an incredible alternative to traditional HVAC systems.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

So, how exactly do heat pumps work? While there are different types of heat pumps, the basic idea is the same. During the warmer months, a heat pump will pull heat from inside your home and transfer it outside essentially acting as an air conditioner. During cool months, the heat pump will pull heat from outside and bring it into your home to increase the temperature. The system is powered by electricity and uses a refrigerant to control the transfer of heat.

What are the Different Types of Heat Pumps?

Consumers have several different options when it comes to heat pumps. An air-source heat pump transfers heat between indoor and outdoor air. Air-source heat pumps are common in residential homes. Some different air-source heat pumps include ductless, ducted, and short-run ducted.

Another alternative to air-source heat pumps are geothermal heat pumps which include ground-source or water-source heat pumps. These heat pumps work by transferring heat between your home and the ground or a water source. While ground-source heat pumps are more expensive to install, they are more efficient and have less expensive operating costs. You can install different ground-source heat pumps: open loops, closed loops, or direct exchange.
